What it is

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a hard, woody bracket fungus that grows on hardwood stumps and logs. It is immediately recognisable: a kidney-shaped or fan-shaped cap with a deep red-brown lacquered surface that looks almost varnished, often banded with paler concentric rings towards the edge. Unlike the soft mushrooms most people picture, mature reishi is tough and corky, which is why it has always been prepared as a tea, a tincture or an extract rather than eaten whole.

Our reishi extract UK supply is grown in Wales rather than imported as commodity bulk, so its origin and quality are known from the start.

Traditional use

Reishi is one of the most storied mushrooms in the world. In traditional Chinese practice it is called lingzhi, often translated as the mushroom of immortality, and in Japan it is known as reishi. It has been used for more than two thousand years, traditionally taken as a calming tonic and associated with rest, composure and longevity. It is frequently described as an adaptogen in traditional and folk frameworks, meaning a substance taken with the aim of helping the body cope with everyday stress.

These are traditional and cultural descriptions of how reishi has been used. They are not medical claims, and we do not present them as proof of any effect.

What the research explores

Scientific interest in reishi tends to focus on two groups of compounds: its triterpenes, the bitter alcohol-soluble molecules that give the mushroom its taste, and its beta-glucans, a type of water-soluble polysaccharide. Research has explored these compounds in the broad context of the immune system, and reishi appears often in the literature on stress modulation, sleep and general resilience, reflecting its traditional reputation.

We want to be straight about the state of that evidence. A good deal of it comes from laboratory and animal studies, and the human trials that exist are often small, short or of mixed quality. The research area is genuinely active, but it does not yet support firm conclusions about benefits in healthy people, and we make no health claims on its basis. The triterpenes that draw so much of this attention are precisely the compounds that a water-only extraction would miss, which is why the science of dual extraction matters here.

How Ffyngau sources it

Our reishi is UK grown and organic, cultivated in Wales rather than bought in as anonymous commodity powder. Because reishi’s value is split between its water-soluble beta-glucans and its alcohol-soluble triterpenes, we dual extract it: a water extraction and an alcohol extraction, run separately and combined. With reishi in particular this is not optional. A water-only extract would leave most of the triterpenes behind, and a single method simply cannot represent the whole mushroom.

The finished reishi is sold as an extract powder, properly dosed rather than under-dosed to cut costs, and fully traceable from growing room to pouch. If you prefer your mushrooms in a daily ritual, our Grym Coffee shows how we build that approach into everyday products.
